What do you remember about gym class? Verbatim interview transcripts, floor scooter choreography, traffic cones, dodge balls, and memories/reenactments of the dreaded and decades-old Presidential Physical Fitness Test power this impulse to devise a piece about how we remember Phys. Ed, and what this means for our public movement practices today. The deviser’s personal stories, along with transcripts from additional interviews with community members, Physical Education instructors, and verbatim historical documents, form the textual springboard for this physical work devised by an ensemble of actor-creators. Featuring excerpts from John F. Kennedy’s The Soft American published in the Sports Illustrated’s December 26th 1960 issue and Meredith Willson’s “Go, Chicken Fat, Go!” Youth Fitness Anthem.
